Neuropathy is a disease of the Peripheral Nerves. Nerves originate from the brain and through the spinal cord they go to all parts of the body. The nerves which are away from the brain and the spinal cord are called peripheral nerves. Damage to the peripheral nerves affects sensation, movement or functioning of the organs and the disease is called peripheral neuropathy or simply neuropathy.
Neuropathy may cause painful cramps, muscle or bone loss, impaired balance, numbness to touch or vibration, reduced sensitivity to temperature or pain. One of the most common causes of neuropathy is uncontrolled diabetes. The causes of neuropathy can be many and finding the root cause of neuropathy is the first challenge for your doctor to provide the right treatment.
Medical advancements in India have answers to all these situations. The solution is part of functional neurosurgery called Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS). The procedure is a minimally invasive procedure done for all above problems and has shown excellent results in patients. Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhawa who is a extensively trained neurosurgeon in Punjab, India with exceptional skills in Functional Neurosurgery. He is probably the only neurosurgeon with such an expertise in entire Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir and even North Eastern Part of India.
Spinal Cord Stimulation is used most often done after non-surgical pain treatment options have failed to provide sufficient relief. Spinal cord stimulators may be used to treat or manage different types of chronic pain. Most common conditions that are treated at our centre in Mohali in Punjab, India are:
Back Pain that continues even after surgery (failed back surgery syndrome)
Post Surgical Pain Management
Pain due to spinal cord injury
Treatment of paraplegic patients
Pain due to Diabetic Neuropathy
Pain in Cancer Patients due to chemotherapy or radiation therapy
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)
Old age patients with lost bladder control
The procedure is performed by Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhawa under local anaesthesia or at times under short general anaesthesia. It is done in two phases, the first phase is the trial phase wherein Dr Randhawa would implant a temporary device for you to test out. Dr Jaspreet will carefully insert the electrodes in the epidural space of the spine with help of guidance through x ray. This just requires a small cut at the back for putting in the electrodes. After a week if patient feels significant relief in pain then the permanent procedure is done. The implant used here has three parts, electordes, a battery and a remote. The battery is placed underneath the skin and the trial electrodes are replaced with sterile electrodes. The remote is used by the patient to control the stimulation depending upon the intensity of the pain. Generally the patients are discharged the next day of the procedure. The Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) procedure is generally done at D10-D12 level of dorsal spine becuase the electroneurons that are responsible for the pain and movement of legs are located there.
The cost of the surgery depends upon the the type of implant used for the surgery. There are two types of implants that are available in case of Spinal Cord Stimulation Surgery. One is normal implant with a battery life, which needs to be replaced and the other one if the implant with the rechargeable battery. The cost of rechargeable battery implant is more than the normal implant and hence the total cost of the surgery is also more in later case. The choice of the implant is done keeping in mind the long term benefit to the patient. Hence it is advisable to consult Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhawa for the treatment and understanding the cost. The cost of the permanent procedure for Spinal Cord Stimulation ranges between INR 16 to 20 lacs.
If you have an individual health insurance policy then this surgery is covered after a period of 2 years from the date of inception of the policy. However if you are a beneficiary of company given policy then the surgery is covered from day one. Some insurance companies do not cover this surgery under the guise of genetic disorder. Always go through the terms of your health insurance policy like room rent capping and co-payment to avoid any kind of financial shocks later on.
